Dr Elizabeth Ainsbury is the UKHSA Deputy Head of the Science and Engineering Profession and leads UKHSA’s Cytogenetics Group, which is recognised as one of the world leading research groups in cytogenetic biological dosimetry. The Chromosome Dosimetry Service (CDS) is the UK’s only biological dosimetry service maintaining the state of the art in dosimetry and advice nationally and internationally and with over 450 papers over the past 40 years on theoretical, experimental and medical aspects of radiation cytogenetics and biological dosimetry.
Dr Ainsbury is a physicist by training who has over 15 years of experience in the fields of cytogenetic dosimetry, associated statistical analysis, short and long term radiation effects and the implications for public health with approximately 120 research publications in the field. Dr Ainsbury has acted as PI or co-PI for a number of multidisciplinary collaborative research projects in the fields of biological dosimetry and associated statistical analysis, currently has a leadership role in a number of projects including the NIHR HPRU on Chemical and Radiation Threats and Hazards, as well as contributing to EURADOS, RENEB and WHO BIODOSENET biodosimetry research and response networks.
Dr Ainsbury lectures on a number of international courses including at Oxford and Surrey Universities has supervised 5 PhD students to completion. Dr Ainsbury is also a fellow of the SRP, a member of the IOP, a member of ICRP Committee 1 on Radiation Effects and has contributed to development of legislation and guidance for radiation protection at the national and international level.
